The Fargo-Moorhead Area
Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota combine with their surrounding communities to make an active metropolitan area that forms a connection between the two neighboring states. According to the Census Bureau, the Fargo-Moorhead area includes all of Cass County in the southeastern corner of North Dakota and Clay County in the northwestern region of Minnesota.

Big Cormorant Lake and Pelican Lake are the two closest and most desirable lakes of the Fargo-Moorhead area. Both lakes have clear water, sandy beaches, high end lake homes and are within 40 minutes from the Fargo-Moorhead urban area.
Big Cormorant Lake is the second largest lake in Becker County, MN. Since Big Cormorant Lake is within a relatively close proximity to the Fargo-Moorhead area, there has been an increase in shoreline development so visitors can have a better experience with relaxing on the beaches, swimming, boating, and fishing. There has also been an increase in demand for lake homes and properties on the pleasantly wooded shoreline of the lake. Water clarity of Big Cormorant Lake ranges from 11-23 feet, with a maximum depth of 75 feet. The lake is known for having an excellent catch of fish, including natural prairie walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappies.
Pelican Lake is a beautiful lake that is known for it's shallow shores that are great for swimming, large sandy beaches, water clarity, and abundance of fish. Pelican Lake has a maximum depth of 38 feet, but over half of the lake is less than 15 feet deep. Water recreation like boating and fishing attract many visitors to the lake. Northern pike and yellow perch are popular sport-fish, but there has also been an increase in other fish like black and brown bullhead, black crappie, and walleye in the lake over the past decade.
Bad Medicine Lake, Elbow Lake, Detroit Lake, Tulaby Lake, and Juggler Lake are other lakes that offer great locations for lake homes, properties and resorts. The lakes all provide beautiful scenery, wooded coverage, and great fishing.
Bad Medicine Lake and Elbow Lake are both located near Itasca State Park and are in "Gods Country." They are both surrounded by towering white pines and are great recreational lakes.
Bad Medicine Lake is one of the most prestigious lakes in all of MN. Bad Medicine Lake is known for it's clear, spring-fed waters and abundance in rainbow trout. The second largest walleye in Minnesota was caught from Bad Medicine Lake. The water clarity ranges from 18-30 feet, which makes the lake a popular scuba diving destination. Bad Medcine Lake is also one of Minnesota's best lakes for all day pontoon rides. The lake is around 5 miles long and reaches depths of up to 90 feet. There are at least two campgrounds in the Bad Medicine Lake area and $500,000 - 1.5 million dollar lake homes are hidden all along the shore line.
Elbow Lake is where the Ottertail River system begins. Elbow Lake has a maximum depth of 76 feet, spring-fed waters, and a water clarity range of 10 - 18 feet. Elbow Lake is known for having huge lake lots, low boat traffic, great fishing, and that "up north" feel that many visitors love. Elbow Lake is rated one of the top ten walleye lakes in Minnesota. The lake is also considered a good fishing location to catch northern pike, and largemouth bass.
Detroit Lake is over 3,000 acres in size and is scattered with many high-end lake properties around it's shorelines. Visitors from the Fargo-Moorhead area, Detroit Lakes area, and other surrounding areas in Minnesota travel to Detroit Lake for the water recreation opportunities like tubing, boating, swimming, and excellent fishing. The water clarity of Detroit Lake ranges from 5-8.5 feet and the maximum depth is almost 90 feet. The lake also contains many fish habitats with a diversity of warm water, cool water, and cold water species like bullheads, panfish, walleye, bluegill, largemouth bass, black crappie, and northern pike. Detroit Lake has also been known to produce muskies over fifty inches long and weighing over thirty pounds. A century ago, the lake was famous for harboring lake sturgeon weighing over 100 pounds. In recent years, there have been two accounts of anglers catching and releasing lake sturgeon.
Tulaby Lake is considered a nice fishing lake with good water quality. There is a modest population of tullibee, walleye, perch, and bluegills. The lake is more than 800 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 43 feet.
Juggler Lake is an odd-shaped, moderately developed lake with islands. The lake has great water clarity, averaging 19 feet, and a maximum depth of 78 feet. Juggler Lake has an abundance of northern pike and smallmouth bass, and is known for the fish being more than 12 inches long.
Fargo-Moorhead Community Attractions and Events
A few of the annual events in the Fargo-Moorhead area include: the St. Patrick's Day 5k Run/Walk, the Fargo Marathon, and the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead Parade of Homes.
The St. Patrick's Day 5k Run/Walk has been one of the staple running/walking events in Fargo for many years. City streets and local bike paths are cut off from motor vehicle traffic for the participants, who start and finish at the Great Northern Bicycle Company. After the event, The Pacers provides food, drinks, and an awards ceremony.
Fargo has also hosted the Fargo Marathon for going on 12 years in 2016, that usually takes place in May. The Fargo Marathon attracts more than 20,000 participants from North Dakota, Minnesota, and their neighboring states, and over 50 live bands that play on the sidelines of the full marathon and half marathon routes.

Fargo-Moorhead Parade of Homes
The Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead is a nonprofit organization that represents the home building industry in several community events and projects throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area. Every year, the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead proudly hosts the Parade of Homes, that runs for two weekends in the Spring and two weekends in the Fall.
The Parade of Homes typically showcases more than 50 newly constructed homes of varying styles and prices in developments in and around the Fargo-Moorhead area. The Parade of Homes gives participating builders the opportunity to experiment and demonstrate unique features, technology, and construction techniques.
The homes are spread throughout the communities of Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, and Dilworth, and are marked by bright signs and pennants to indicate which homes are participating in the Parade of Homes.
Each year, all Hornbacher's stores provide magazines that contain a listing of all homes entered into the event, details about each home entry, and a map to each home. Citizens and guests of the Fargo-Moorhead area are free to visit these sites during the announced times that the Parade is open.
Nearby Detroit Lakes Activities and Recreation
About an hour east of Fargo and Moorhead is Detroit Lakes, a very popular destination for residents of the Fargo-Moorhead area. There are many attractions, whether it is checking out the arts and entertainment scene, shopping, mini golfing, visiting the recreation area, or enjoying the wildlife of one of the many state parks or forests where bird watching, hiking the trails, and camping are encouraged.
Detroit Mountain is a 200-acre recreation destination that is located about three miles from the city limits off Highway 34. Detroit Mountain is open all year and features recreational activities for every season, whether it is alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snow boarding, snow shoeing, tubing at the Landslide Tubing Park, fat bike rentals for the snow seasons, and mountain bike rentals for the network of trails during the warm seasons.
The residents and guests of the Fargo-Moorhead area are also attracted to Detroit Lakes for the opportune water activities the area has to offer. Detroit Lakes is surrounded by over 400 lakes and resorts. Sunbathing on the Mile Long Beach on Little Detroit Lake, rent scuba gear and explore the life and view under the lake water, or take the boat out on the lake to fish. There's a lot to do and a whole lot of fun waiting for you in nearby Detroit Lakes. Makes for a very nice day trip from Fargo-Moorhead.
